A ROMANTIC’S SKIER WINTER ADVENTURE

Home » News » A ROMANTIC’S SKIER WINTER ADVENTURE

Matthew Wilton is a true romantic. And a true champ.

This winter, he is taking on a Birkie ski twice, and the reason why is enough to make your heart melt. It’s his fiancée Kristi’s first time at a loppet, and he is determined to cheer her on and support her. So, he’s skiing the 13k with her and then going the extra mile so to speak, as he’s also doing the 31k by himself.

When asked about how he felt about skiing both events, Matthew responded with a laugh, “I still have to complete both events! But I think I’ll survive.”

This isn’t Matthew’s first time skiing the Birkie, and he’s not stopping anytime soon. It will be his seventh time this season. In the last few years he skied the 55 km four times, and the 31 km twice, with this season being the third. He’s determined to earn the Purple Bib, which is awarded to participants who have skied the 55 km event for at least 10 years.

ENDURANCE SPORTS ALL YEAR LONG

Matthew, who’s from Camrose, spends a lot of time on the trails year round to stay in shape. He loves cross-country skiing in the winter and enjoys ultra distance trail running in the warmer months.

Additionally, he enjoys exploring the beautiful winter trails available for cross-country skiing. Plus his fiancée’s newfound love for the sport is another reason to pursue it. He loves taking his fiancée Kristi along with him, and he recommends that everyone should take a newbie out on the trails and show them the ropes.

SKI WITH A FRIEND

If you have friends or family members interested in cross country skiing, take a cue from Matthew and accompany them. Encouragement and guidance go a long way in helping others feel comfortable and confident on the trails.

Both Matthew and Kristi will be skiing the Birkie this year, so if you see them, be sure to congratulate them. And don’t forget to join them and celebrate yourself at this seaon’s Viking Feast.
