Viking Feast: The Birkie Welcomes the Swans of Winter

Step back in time and into the soundscape of the Vikings!

The Canadian Birkebeiner Society is thrilled to welcome Janina Carlstad and John Fletcher — Central Alberta musicians known as The Swans of Winter — to both the Viking Feast and the Festival Tent on Saturday, February 14th

Using rare Nordic instruments from the Bronze Age through medieval times — including bone flutes, horns, drums, and strings — Janina and John bring to life the music that helped Norse people endure long, cold winters.

Raise Your Horns to the Viking Music!

  • Enjoy live performances at the Viking Feast and Festival Tent
  • Explore and (carefully) touch some of these relic instruments

Want to Play in a Viking Band?

Viking Feast guests may be invited to join an impromptu Viking band and try traditional Scandinavian instruments. Interested?

Stories, Sheep & Norse Adventures

Janina and John also love sharing stories about Hamingja – the Heritage Farm & Nature Preserve in Central Alberta, where they care for ancient Viking-age sheep breeds and host Norse-inspired retreats.

Whether you’re skiing, volunteering, or cheering from the sidelines — listen for the music, visit the Festival Tent, and don’t miss the Viking Feast. And yes… ask them about the sheep.

Ski like a Viking, Eat like a Viking!

Join us for a family style meal, entertaining speakers who share what the Birkie means to them, great entertainment, draw prizes and a recap of the Birkie festival. All are welcome and the use of cutlery is always optional or you can eat with your hands … like a Viking!

Viking feasts were at the core of honouring triumphs, bringing together families and reinforcing bonds. They would showcase the hosts’ status and were essential to carry on folklore and upholding the Norse traditions.
