Volunteer – Full/New Moon Birkie

On these night adventures, volunteers keep skiers safe, and make a mean cup of hot chocolate!

Clothing Tent – a service for Birkie participants.

Who is In Charge?

Peter Kershaw is a long time Birkie’iite. He has been involved with the Full/New Moon Birkies since the event was first offered and is a staunch advocate for skiing in the dark (not just with your eyes shut on challenging downhills).

Prior to skiing around in the dark, he was a Professor at the University of Alberta in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. In 2005, about the year the photo to the left was taken, he was named Scientist of the Year by the Earthwatch Institute, an organization supporting field research and sustainable conservation around the world.

Context For All Roles

Safety Considerations: As there is not a warm up tent, dress for the weather in layers. If skiing then have at least one functioning head lamp with spare batteries.  Everyone must return to the shelter at the Waskahegan Staging Area by 10 p.m. at the latest. If the conditions are too cold or unsafe, we will email you that the event is cancelled. The ski goes from Waskahegan Staging Area to Meadow Shelter, which is a round trip of 12 km. Skiers who would like a shorter trip can turn around at any time, but must stay with a buddy. Patrollers are placed along the route including a sweep at the end of the event.

Location: Waskahegan Staging Area, Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area.

Training: Virtual briefing before hand and onsite training.
