Volunteer – Marketing

A high-power team that tells the Birkie Story! Volunteers are experienced, new to marketing, or want to develop new skills.

Who is In Charge?

Delia Meenhorst was elected as president of the society representing 5,000 communications managers of housing cooperatives in the Netherlands when she was 28 years old. Ever since then, she’s been serving on boards that perfectly blend her passions with her professional know-how. In 2018 she joined the zealous Birkie Board as a beginning xc skier.

With a Master’s degrees in Business Communications and Digital Media, Delia brings an abundance of knowledge to the table. Delia considers herself a generalist with a diverse background across industries including pharmaceuticals, government, non-profits, e-commerce, education, hospitality, tourism and software.

Context For All Roles

Join our Marketing Team and help promote the Canadian Birkie Festival and our new Biking Like a Viking events!
Are you passionate about increasing awareness for classic cross-country skiing and cycling in Canada? We need your help to promote the amazing Canadian Birkie events located in the heart of Alberta. Here are some questions we need to address:

  • How can we best reach both cross-country skiers and cyclists to let them know about our events?
  • How can we optimize our marketing budget and effort? What would an effective pricing strategy be for our events? How can we balance sponsorships, funds, and market value while optimizing reach and registrations?
  • How can we showcase the fun and lifelong experience that the Canadian Birkie offers for skiers, cyclist, volunteers and partners?

If you have any ideas on how to tackle these questions with a marketing strategy, engaging stories, striking designs, a fun social media campaign, or a high response rate, we want you on our team!

Safety Considerations: Marketing volunteers often work with a computer and/or mobile device. We advise you to take breaks regularly and take precautions to prevent any overuse injuries. When visiting outdoor locations, please dress appropriate for the weather conditions.

Location: Depending on your role, most volunteer work can be done at your own chosen location. The marketing team meets twice a month online. On occasion volunteers visit locations for interviews, media creation, set up displays, distribute marketing material, etc.

Training: Virtual/in-person briefing in January will be required. An in-person award organization meeting will be held closer to the Birkie. Attendance at the Volunteer Orientation the week of the Birkie is highly recommended. Awards Lead will provide mentorship and guidance.
